For Immediate Release:

PLAQUE TO BE PRESENTED TO GADZOOSDAA STUDENT RESIDENCE NOVEMBER 5

WHITEHORSE, YUKON – Whitehorse, Yukon – Every Student, Every Day and the Yukon Government will be presenting a plaque to the Gadzoosdaa Student Residence commemorating the $10,800 funding awarded to them for the 2020-21 school year. The presentation will take place at 2 PM on November 5, 2021, at the Gadzoosdaa Student Residence in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Responding to the increased challenges related to learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, Every Student, Every Day worked in collaboration with Gadzoosdaa Residence on the priorities needed to curb the high rates of school absenteeism and to increase student attendance and engagement. These priorities included the purchase of sports and fitness equipment to promote healthy and engaging activities and enhancements to the dorm environment, making it more like home for the students. Since 2017, Every Student, Every Day has supported Gadzoosdaa with over $43,000 for educational projects, including the Walking with Elders Stories From The Land project and their incentive programs for students.

For the 2021–22 school year, a total of $150,000 in direct financial support has been awarded to 18 Yukon schools, school councils and First Nations governments and will help implement 24 projects designed to boost student attendance by removing barriers and fostering increased engagement resulting in a greater sense of belonging at school.

“Student attendance is one of the most important factors contributing to student success – when students miss school, they miss important learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly tend to get better grades and practice important work habits that can benefit them throughout their lives. We are proud to partner with the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society to support the Every Student, Every Day initiative for the past nine years. We have seen that this initiative has a direct impact on regular attendance to help students advance their learning as well as develop healthy work habits and social skills”- Minister of Education Jeanie McLean, Government of Yukon

Since its establishment in 2012, Every Student, Every Day has directly supported more than 140 local projects with over $1.2 million raised primarily from Yukon businesses and individual donations. The Government of Yukon has also contributed up to $30,000 annually, along with administrative support to coordinate with schools, Yukon First Nations governments, communities and non-governmental organizations.

ABOUT EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY

Every Student, Every Day is an initiative of Victoria Gold Corp’s registered, not-for-profit charity, the Victoria Gold Yukon Student Encouragement Society. A committee of Department of Education staff and Society representatives select successful projects to receive funding for each school year. Throughout the 2020-21 school year, volunteers from Every Student, Every Day hosted socially distanced and virtual events to raise awareness and funds to improve student attendance in the territory. In the fall of 2020, the annual fundraising event was held online and generated donations from individual and corporate donors from around the world. The next fundraising event will be held on January 22, 2022.
